Betsie’s Story

Betsie’s Journey: Faith, Family, and Finding
Her Way Forward
The Beginning of a New Journey
When Elizabeth “Betsie” first faced the devastating news—two detached retinas, one in 2022 and another in 2023—her world went quiet. Sitting in the office of the Eye Institute, she was told there was nothing more that could be done to improve her vision. But while her eyesight was fading, her story was just beginning.
A Call for Help Opens a New Door
It was her brother David who reached out to Vision Forward, hoping to find a lifeline for his sister. That call opened a door to a community Betsie never knew she needed. At her first appointment, Dr. Hinson gently confirmed her diagnosis, but she also gave Betsie something invaluable: hope. With practical strategies and tools for adapting to vision loss, Betsie began to see life in a new light.
Embracing New Tools and Training
Since then, she’s fully embraced the journey. From white cane training to using a Reveal Magnifier—which speaks text aloud—technology has become an empowering ally. With help from Luke and Cory in tech classes, she mastered tools like the iPhone and assistive devices like MetaGlasses. She attends support groups regularly, drawing strength from new friendships and shared experiences.
The Power of Love and Support
But what makes Betsie’s story truly special is the love that surrounds her. David has been her rock—buying her helpful tools like bump dots and the Reveal Magnifier, attending support group meetings by her side, and learning everything he can to understand her experience. And as Betsie continues to grow, she’s discovered something truly remarkable: her late mother also received services from Vision Forward back when it was called the Badger Home for the Blind, as she too navigated life with a visual impairment: macular degeneration. That connection across generations brings Betsie both comfort and purpose.
Looking Ahead with Purpose
Today, Betsie is filled with hope. Her goals are clear: begin Braille classes and work with DVR to pursue a career as a receptionist—an aspiration inspired by Max at the Vision Forward front desk, whose presence has shown her exactly what’s possible.
Faith, Friendship, and Moving Forward
Betsie credits both God and her brother David for helping her adapt to vision loss. She also gives thanks for the friends she’s met through Vision Forward who’ve encouraged her to join BOLD (Blind Outdoor Leisure Discovery), a Lion’s Club social group that gives her the chance to explore the world again—this time, with confidence, adventure, and laughter.
A Brighter Future
From heartbreak to healing, Betsie’s story is one of resilience, faith, and the powerful bonds of family and community. And though her vision may have changed, her future is brighter than ever.
