We are thrilled to be a part of the 7th annual Doors Open Milwaukee 2017 event! Visit Vision Forward to learn about the history of our agency, get a tour of our children and adult services wings, visit our store, meet local artists who are blind or visually impaired, and more!
Vision Forward (then called the Badger Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired) was founded by Adam Zepp in 1919. With affordable housing for blind and visually impaired adults being a main goal, the association purchased a Victorian mansion, formerly the Nugent Sanitarium, at 912 N. Hawley Road. The first Badger Home for the Blind opened at this location in 1924. In 1967, ground was broken for a new housing facility and residents moved into the larger, dorm-style building in 1969. In 2002, the residents at the Badger Association transitioned from dorms to independent living in the new 58-unit apartment building next door to their old home. Vision Forward is still located at 912 N. Hawley Road. The old housing facility was renovated and now holds our Children’s Program, Adult Vision Rehabilitation Services, Technology and Education Center, and Store.
Vision Forward has been an important organization in the Milwaukee community for the past 98 years! A guided tour during the Doors Open event will explore the transformation of our building and organization throughout our history. Experience how technology has evolved and made everyday tasks more accessible, learn about specialized services for children with vision loss and see adaptive products in our retail store.
