Synopsis: Geographic atrophy (GA) is a progressive and debilitating condition that causes permanent vision loss. It is a leading cause of vision loss in older populations, particularly in individuals aged 50 years and older. Its prevalence increases with age, and due to the aging population, around 5 million Americans will have GA by 2050. Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of GA, however, there are multiple other causal pathologies including inherited macular dystrophies and neurodegenerative macular diseases.  This session will elaborate on key diagnostic features and imaging findings of GA causal pathologies and will also explore current and emerging treatment options that offer hope for preserving vision.

Dr. Coussa’s presentation will be accompanied by Colleen Kickbush, Vision Forward’s Director of Children’s Services, covering the Neurological with Visual Impairments program (NAVI), This multidisciplinary program supports individuals of all ages with visual and neurological impairments through coordinated therapy and vision services. NAVI focuses on each person’s goals, strengths, and interests, with care delivered in a clinic setting and extended into the home and community. A team-based approach ensures consistent, cross-disciplinary support tailored to each individual’s needs. Learn how optometrists can play a key role in this collaborative model to enhance patient outcomes.
