Mayah’s Story

Empowered by Vision: Mayah’s Steps Toward Independence and College Dreams
A Challenging Start with a Determined Spirit
When 16-year-old Mayah was referred to Vision Forward through the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), she was navigating more than just the challenges of high school. Diagnosed with Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis, a condition that results in low vision, limited distance and peripheral vision, and nystagmus, Mayah faced daily tasks with determination—but also frustration.
Though she had previously received some training through school, the limited time her vision teachers could spend on activities of daily living (ADLs) left Mayah and her family seeking more focused support. After an initial ADL assessment in August 2023, Mayah and her mother decided to pause before beginning training, prioritizing academic stability.
A Fresh Start with Personalized Training
By December 2024, Mayah felt ready—and motivated—to begin her training journey. Her goals were wide-ranging and practical: organization and item identification, medication management, personal grooming, clothing care, cleaning, eating skills, and food preparation.
At Vision Forward, Mayah received individualized instruction tailored to her personal needs and vocational goals. Training sessions were interactive, hands-on, and focused on practical strategies using a combination of adaptive tools and techniques.
Teamwork Makes All the Difference
A key part of Mayah’s success was the incredible partnership between her and her mother. Her mom attended each training session, took notes, and supported Mayah’s learning at home. She even purchased tools Mayah found helpful during training—like an electric can opener with tactile cues and a “pan pickle” to help safely position pots on a flat-top stove. These tools made challenging tasks more manageable and built Mayah’s confidence along the way.
Confidence Grows, Dreams Take Shape
As her training progressed, so did Mayah’s comfort level. She began tackling once-stressful tasks with greater ease, all while staying open to learning and feedback. With every new skill, her independence grew—and so did her dreams.
Mayah now sees a future that once felt uncertain. She has already visited college campuses and is excited about attending—a milestone she and her mom once weren’t sure was possible.
A Bright Future Ahead
Mayah’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible with the right tools, support, and attitude. Her hard work, her mother’s unwavering support, and the guidance she received through Vision Forward’s adaptive living skills training have prepared her for a more independent and confident future.
We’re proud to have been part of her journey—and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next.
