Mikaela’s Story
When Mikaela first came to Vision Forward in December 2023 for outpatient speech therapy, she was quiet and observant, taking in a world that was still new to her. By May 2024, she bravely stepped into our Eye Learn classroom—her very first time in a group learning environment. It was a big adjustment: new teachers, unfamiliar routines, and the busy energy of other children. But Mikaela brought something powerful with her—her bright, resilient spirit.
Though the transition was challenging at first, Mikaela’s strength and determination began to shine through. Today, she walks into the classroom with a cheerful energy that lights up the room. She uses eye contact, gestures, and joyful words like “hi” to connect with those around her. Each day, she continues to grow stronger—sitting up with support, grasping small toys, turning the pages of books, and using her AAC device with eye gaze to express herself.
With loving encouragement from her family, Mikaela is also learning to walk using a gait trainer and exploring the world around her through her vision. She’s starting to look at people and objects more easily on her left side and within close range, and with gentle modifications and time, she reaches for books and toys using her left hand.
What truly makes Mikaela’s progress so inspiring is not just her physical development—but the heart she brings to every step. Her willingness to work hard, to connect with others, and to rise above her challenges is matched only by the love and support of her incredible family. Together, they are a team—cheering her on and celebrating each milestone.
Looking ahead, Mikaela’s goals are full of promise: to communicate more independently using her device, gestures, and words; to gain the strength to engage fully in classroom activities with her peers; and to continue using her vision to explore and interact with the world around her.
Mikaela reminds us every day that with the right support, a loving community, and a determined heart, anything is possible. Her story is one of courage, joy, and the extraordinary impact of believing in a child’s potential.
