Patrick's Story

Patrick’s Journey Toward Confidence and Independence
At just 2 years old, Patrick has already overcome many challenges associated with his multiple diagnoses, including cerebral palsy and cortical visual impairment. But Patrick is much more than his diagnoses. He is a happy, social, and engaging child who loves being around others, sharing toys, and connecting with his peers. His family wanted an educational environment where he could build confidence, develop communication and functional skills, and gain greater independence. In November 2025, Patrick joined Vision Forward’s early education classroom, where individualized support was designed around his strengths and areas of need.
Growing Communication, Confidence, and Independence
When Patrick first arrived, communication and participation were challenging. He used a small number of words, vocalizations, and basic signs, and he often had difficulty remaining engaged during activities such as story time and circle time. Today, Patrick has made remarkable progress. He is becoming more vocal, imitating a greater variety of sounds, using signs and gestures to express his wants and dislikes, and communicating intentionally with the people around him. He has also formed friendships with classmates and is increasingly excited to participate in social activities.
Patrick’s independence has blossomed, too. He can unzip and remove his coat, find his name on his cubby, hang his backpack, and retrieve his snack independently. He can follow two- to three-step directions, complete puzzles with minimal assistance, and remain engaged during familiar songs and classroom activities for longer periods. Perhaps most importantly, Patrick has learned to keep trying when something is difficult. Instead of quickly giving up, he is developing the confidence and persistence to try new strategies and tackle challenges.
A Family Partnership That Builds Success
Vision Forward’s support extends beyond the classroom. When Patrick’s family was unsure how to begin toilet training, our educational team worked alongside them to develop consistent, positive strategies that could be used at home and at school. Through that collaboration, Patrick successfully became potty trained—a tremendous milestone in his independence and self-help skills.
Patrick’s progress is a powerful reminder of what can happen when children are given the right support, encouragement, and opportunities to grow. Through individualized education and a strong partnership with his family, Patrick is developing the communication, independence, persistence, and confidence he needs to take on his next chapter—and proving that with the right support, his potential has no limits.
