Susan's Story

Learning, Independence, and New Beginnings at 72

Sue first came to Vision Forward in May of 2024 after being diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. At 72, she was determined to continue living life on her own terms. Her goals were clear: expand her job opportunities and become more independent at home.

Since starting at Vision Forward, Sue has participated in orientation and mobility training, activities of daily living instruction, and assistive technology training to help her adapt to vision loss.

Building Skills for Independence

Because Sue has limited usable vision, her technology training focused on non-visual techniques. She began by learning non-visual typing, building the foundation needed to move on to screen reader skills. These tools allow Sue to access her computer and navigate digital information independently.

Sue quickly proved to be a dedicated learner, working patiently through each lesson until she fully understood the concepts and could apply them with confidence.

Technology That Supports What Matters Most

One of the most powerful parts of Sue’s training has been connecting new technology skills to meaningful moments in her life. As Sue works toward converting to Judaism, many of her assignments involve online communication and written responses.

While learning Outlook, Sue practiced accessing emails needed to attend Zoom meetings that are part of her conversion process. Later, while learning Microsoft Word, she used her new skills to complete a document with questions from her Rabbi related to her conversion.

By tying technology training to goals that matter deeply to her, Sue has found strong motivation to keep learning and growing.

Determination That Inspires

Sue has been an excellent student throughout her training. She approaches each lesson with focus and determination, practicing until she understands each concept and can apply it independently.

Her journey is a powerful reminder that learning and independence do not have an age limit. With the right tools, training, and support, new opportunities and meaningful connections can continue to grow at any stage of life.
